Animal source food is an important component in maternal and child health. Just one eight-ounce serving of milk daily can ameliorate childhood stunting and two ounces of animal-based protein, meat or fish, can offset cognitive delays.
Abebe Habtamu, an Ethiopian PhD student from Addis Ababa University in Debre Zeit, has established a project aimed at improving the quality of milk products produced by the local dairy cooperatives who supply Ethiopian communities. Veterinarians Without Borders is backing this project, and is seeking donations to help further the work.
